Partners for Change Addressing Domestic Violence

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time when domestic violence victim advocates at Fayette Cares and across the nation focus public attention on the epidemic of domestic violence and encourage everyone to become part of the solution.

“Roughly 15-20% of my cases are domestic violence,” states Fayette County General Sessions and Juvenile Court Judge Jim Gallagher.  With 1 in 3 American women reporting being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives, domestic violence is a pervasive issue that reaches across all ages, races and economic levels.

Domestic violence effects every area of our community. Healthcare and law enforcement must stretch resources to respond to those fleeing dangerous situations. Businesses suffer from lost work and decreased productivity, with an estimated 21-60% of victims losing their jobs due to reasons stemming from abuse.  Children who witness domestic violence often have medical and behavioral issues related to the trauma experienced.

Although domestic violence is a complex problem with no simple solutions, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and all year round, everyone is encouraged to join efforts to stand up against domestic violence in a shared vision to make our communities healthier and safer for all.

Fayette Cares provides domestic violence intervention resources for victims of abuse and awareness resources for caring community members who want to help break the cycle of violence.  Individuals who want to help can call Fayette Cares at (901) 465-3802 or visit www.fayettecares.org for more information. Victims can find help 24 hours a day by calling (901) 466-0015.
