Fayette Co. Schools Run, Walk, Stroll and Give Hope at Fayette Cares 5k

Fayette County Public Schools are striving to build the largest team of students, teachers, and parents to walk, run, stroll and give hope by participating in the Cotton Pickin’ 5k & 1k Cotton Candy Fun Run benefiting Fayette Cares on Saturday, September 10th.

Schools are running at the opportunity to register large student groups, including students, parents and teachers, to benefit from the deeply discounted registration.  “Our schools are excited to take part in a healthy and fun family event while supporting the great work of Fayette Cares,” says Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Marlon King, “the competition is ON among teachers and classrooms to have a huge show of support at the race.”

Participants of all abilities are welcome to run, walk, or stroll the course which weaves through historic Somerville.  Those with a competitive streak will love the chip timing, providing individual results within minutes of crossing the finish line. With over 100 awards in age and gender groups, many 5k race participants will take home the popular cotton bale trophies.  All 1k Fun Run participants receive a medallion.

True competitors will answer the course record challenge to go down in Cotton Pickin’ history.  The runners who break records (Male – James Basse 17:12 and Female – Amanda Wardlaw 19:05) will celebrate victory with a massive trophy, a commemorative shirt and complimentary registration to defend their title in the following year.

Post-race fun continues when the awards are presented at the Fayette County Chamber Cotton Festival.  The festival offers family friendly events including live music, inflatables, games, a car show, food, shopping and more.

Thanks to caring supporters like Fayette County Public Schools and other sponsors, walkers, runners, and volunteers, the race and fun run raise money to help Fayette Cares shelter the homelessness, break the cycle of domestic violence, and empower families in crisis to achieve stability. Extra Mile Sponsors include Fayette County Public Schools, Somerville Animal Hospital, Town of Oakland, and Memphis Contract Packaging/Softee. Event Sponsors include Central Distributors, Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, Hurdle Machine Works, Print Solutions, Somerville First United Methodist Church, Tri-State Printing, and Trustmark Bank.
