Caring Grows at Shelter Garden

The Fayette Cares homeless shelter garden gave all it could after more than a decade. When word got out that the garden needed new life, local gardeners and supporters including Fayette County Master Gardeners, the Somerville Rotary Club, and members of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, sprang into action.

These caring groups joined forces to create a design, raise money, and provide labor to transform the space into a garden of caring. The garden now has raised metal beds, fresh soil, new ground cover, a bird bath, and an abundance of fruits and vegetables.

Gardens are wonderful reminders of new life, growth, wellness, and beauty.  The space, lovingly prepared by volunteers, gives Fayette Cares clients a peaceful place to connect with nature on their journey of healing and restoration.  It allows children at the shelter to learn about growing food and enjoy the fruits of their labor as they harvest cucumbers, tomatoes and blueberries.

The Somerville Rotary Club hosted a luncheon, gathering the groups to celebrate the completion of the project.  They then met at Fayette Cares for a ceremony where the garden was blessed by Fr. Robbie Favazza of St. Philip and dedicated to all who come to Fayette Cares.  To families needing refuge from violence, poverty, and despair.  To volunteers and donors who show they care by giving their time talent and treasure.  And to the staff who work round-the-clock to nurture and protect families.

Fayette County Master Gardeners continue to provide volunteers that maintain the Fayette Cares gardens and grounds, creating a welcoming place for neighbors in need.
