Shelter
Seven year old Bobby rolls the toy cars on the ground at his mother’s feet as they prepare to move in to the Fayette Cares shelter. Bobby looks up from playing and asks “Mommy will we be sleeping in the cold car again?”
A volunteer scrambles to gather the basic necessities for the family and opens the door to the one room refuge. As Bobby walks into the warm shelter his eyes widen, he turns and exclaims “You saved us!”
In a county of approximately 35,000 and rapidly growing, Fayette Cares is the only agency that provides shelter. The single 250 square foot room is equipped with a full kitchen and bathroom, and has been a temporary home to hundreds of Fayette County families in despair.
In an effort to meet increasing shelter demands, Fayette Cares has developed Hope’s Cottage. This supportive housing program, accommodating four families, will build self-reliance through life skills training addressing financial management, parenting skills, domestic violence, permanent housing, career development, and physical and mental health care.
